Steering wheel
A Helmsman, sometimes called Wheelman or Steersman, must be able to execute and understand the steering orders given by the Conning Officer. A Conning officer can be the Master of the ship; the Officer on Duty; or the Pilot who gives the order to helmsman and control the ship’s navigation. In this sense, the helmsman must be able to understand and execute steering orders; take the manual steering immediately in high traffic density areas and in other circumstances needed; report to the officer any malfunctions on the steering system and be familiar with the steering system used which includes proper procedures in changing over from manual steering to autopilot to the non follow-up mode and vice versa; the ship’s rudder, steering and maneuvering characteristics of the vessel, etc. In my experience as a deck officer, I used to trick my helmsman by giving them sometimes a wheel command that is apparently endangers the vessel and I will see on how the he respond to it. But sad to say that 90% of them will just obey and execute the command without questioning the conning officer. A helmsman must question the order given by a conning officer if he thinks the command is not safe. Like for instance, the conning officer on a heavily loaded ship wishes to alter course hard to starboard. This will lead to a heavy list to starboard and the worst is it could capsize. A helmsman as well must report to the conning officer that the command has been understood before executing it and after it was executed. This will allow the officer to know if the order has been received correctly and executed properly. One of the key to a Safe Navigation is a great teamwork between the conning officer and the helmsman along with the look-out and other members of the bridge team. Over the past few days, Jojoeland.com was listed as a suspicious site. Visitors were driven away by a warning message (see the snapshot) that proceeding to the site may harm your computer. It was found out by Google last March 26, 2009 that there were 2 pages of this site resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent. Such software is hosted at xoads.com and 9u9u.info which are hosted on one network: AS6939 (HURRICANE). One of those domains appeared to be functioning as intermediaries for distributing malware to Jojoeland visitors. When Jojoeland.com made its own investigation, it was found out that a malicious code was added to a third party Ad script of CEOads. If it happened that you have CEOads running on your website, I suggest having it removed. Be careful in placing codes and scripts on your site. Although google emphasized that Jojoeland.com has not hosted this malicious software and forever it will not, it already made an impact of worries and threats to Jojoeland visitors. Nevertheless, Google recently reviewed this website and it is now cleaned. My apologies to the visitors, users, and partners of Jojoeland.com.

It should be the policy of an organization to take all rational and practicable steps to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees and to protect all other persons against hazards to safety and health under their premises and its activities. The Safety awareness among individuals in an organization and realistic emergency procedures should be strictly in place to safeguard against accidents and injuries. But when your Emergency arrangement is not yet well structured or there is no such arrangement in your organization at all, at least you or your superior must be able to react efficiently at your own level and capabilities to evacuate others away from danger. That is why it is very important to assign a responsible person in case an emergency arises. Herein you will find the general procedures on an emergency and how to evacuate safely from your building premises to a safe area:
1.        Immediately upon hearing the fire alarm or an announcement to evacuate, all personnel shall do so calmly. On your way out, turn off lights and all electrical equipment and proceed to your designated assembly points; or to an area clear from walls, buildings and other dangers in case you do not have this arrangement.
2.        A responsible person shall let their subordinates to form two lines (only when dealing with a huge crowd or evacuating from narrow corridors) inside the premises and prepare to move out. Unless they receive contrary instructions, they shall lead towards the exits until they reach the assembly point.
3.        Everybody shall walk briskly but do not run, push nor attempt to overtake one another. The responsible person shall call the roll to account for individuals under their look-out. Should there be anybody missing, the responsible person shall immediately inform authorities so that actions can be made.
4.        Do not let anybody to re-enter the building unless it has been secured and confirmed that it is clear and out of danger.
Emergencies are unpredictable. So be prepared when it happen.

Under old traditions of the sea and various provisions of laws internationally, merchant ships are obligated to assist those in distress at sea whenever they can safely do so. Their responsibility to render assistance to a distressed vessel or aircraft is based on compassionate factors and as established by international practice. Specific obligations can be found in several conventions, including Annex 12 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue, and Regulation V/33 of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS 1974).

Hence,  the Merchant Ships Search and Rescue download page was established to provide education and training resources to benefit the students and instructors in the Maritime Profession, especially the students of Capitol University particularly the College of Maritime Education and anyone interested in learning the role of Merchant ships during Search and Rescue Operation. The PowerPoint download is provided for free and is proudly my own work. Click here to go to MERSAR main download page. For more Maritime Education powerpoints go to the Download Section.

Raising freshwater aquarium and pond fishes is one of the things that I love to do. I started it as a hobby when I was still in my elementary years. I started with swordtails and guppies place in an ordinary large basin. These types of aquarium fishes reproduce live youngs as they were live bearers every three weeks. Guppies reproduce every week or two. It had become a problem when my tank was crowded. So be careful in raising these live bearers. It was transferred into a huge aquarium tanks and mixed with various compatible aquarium species. Until now, I successfully raised them and breed fish like angel fish, oscar, goldfish, pleco, cichlids like convicts, parrots and many of them. But what really made me busier was raising Koi. Koi is a Japanese name for Carp. They come in variant bright colors on their foreheads and backs which made them very attractive to look in ponds. I manage to have 20 of them in a 20 ft. x 3 ft. own made pond. Breeding is a little bit tricky and you will need a lot of patience and hard work in order to breed them successfully and here are my tips if you are into breeding koi. You will need to place two well conditioned 3-5 year old male along with one 4-6 year old female koi into a breeding tank. A male koi is identified as slimmer with white spots in their pectoral fins and gill covers and the female having a bulbous body and bigger abdomens which is softer when full of eggs. Place as well a net or any garden net at the side of the pond as this will arouse them during mating as well as serve as a hangout for the fry once the eggs are hatched. Leave them for 3 to 5 days and if nothing happens, recondition them. The mating begins at dawn when the male koi chases the female and rubbing or pushing the female’s abdomen with their head. During this period, give them privacy and do not disturb. The female will later on start to spawn and releases her eggs. The male koi will fertilize the eggs once released by the female. The spawning can reach up to 5-8 hours and after this process, remove them from the breeding tank as they will be hungry and eat those eggs in the tank. The eggs will hatch in about 3 to 5 days and do not feed them in another 3 to 5 days. I use boiled and finely powdered egg yolk, daphnia or brine shrimp. One month after, start culling. For me, good quality kois are those that attract me. So culling may not be an option. You will be so proud of your own raised koi than buying it from a pet shop. Check “My Koi Gallery” and see photos of koi eggs, fry and my own raised KOI.

Fire is probably the greatest single safety-related threat to our workplaces, our homes and the members of it.   Even if everyone were to escape safely, a fire could destroy our facilities and all our documents and data.   It is important therefore that we do as much as we can to prevent a fire starting.   If despite our best efforts a fire should start, a fast and effective response can help save life and property.  So I made a simple guide and hope this will make you aware of the procedures in case a fire arises.

If you discover a fire, it is important to take the following steps in the order given:
1)         Sound the alarm whether the fire is still small as no fire is so small that the alarm does not need to be sounded.  A fire extinguisher should not be discharged onto a fire until the alarm has been sounded.
2)         Get someone to call the fire department.
3)         Warn others in the area by shouting “fire”!  as some people do not always respond immediately to fire alarms and may only think of it as a false alarm.
4)         Only if you can do so without putting your own safety at risk, attempt to fight the fire with a suitable extinguisher, otherwise close the door to the area where the fire is to contain the fire and leave the building and await the arrival of the fire brigade.

If you hear the fire alarm (normally a continuous ringing of the bell for more than 10 seconds):
1)         Check the rooms near to yours, if you can, to ensure the occupants have heard the alarm and have left
2)         Leave the building by the nearest exit and go to the assembly points
3)         If you have any information about someone who might be still in the building, report to the person in charge.
Do not re-enter the building until the fire alarm has been silenced.
Always make it a daily habit to check that corridors and escape routes must be kept clear. Combustible materials should not be stored in corridors or on escape routes where they could become a source of fire and smoke.

Furniture and other items should not be placed so they partially block escape routes. Narrowing of escape routes will reduce the rate at which people can leave the building in an emergency.  In a corridor filled with smoke, furniture can create a serious obstacle for someone who is trying to find their way out. Do you have a website and love to blog? It is time for you to monetize it. One way is through blogging. I still consider myself a newbie in this field and even in writing articles but when I feel like writing I publish it right away. You don’t have to force yourself to be an expert in blogging. Each of us have different characteristics and have different approaches on things we like, dislike and even the things we have not yet experienced. You may be afraid to voice out your own opinion but hey! you will never know you might be a born consultant. Reviewing products, services, organizations, companies and stuffs for others in the way of blogging is what blog advertising is. The way bloggers earn money is through advertisers. These advertisers could be big time companies or small businessmen, website owners or they may even be bloggers. They give you opportunities to review what they like you to review.  It could be in a positive output or a negative one. But it would be better to be true to your opinion. These advertisers pay you for doing reviews. But how you do that? Just put yourself as an Actor looking for a gig. You as one would definitely need a center man like a Manager to put you on gigs. Now as a blogger you need as well that center man – The blog advertising website like payingpost.com where not just publishers meet but so with advertisers. You can sign-up as a Blogger or as an Advertiser. You can as well sign-up for their affiliate program where affiliates earn $15.00 for every advertiser that creates a campaign at payingpost. You will not get complications in this website. It is simple to use in a stylish design. With their new layout, publishers and advertisers will find it easier to navigate regardless of what web browser you will use.

Are you planning to go to Dakak but you are short of budget? Well I will tell you a place I spent time just recently during my Christmas vacation at Dapitan City, Philippines. It is a place around a 15 kilometer very rough road ride from Dapitan. I am supposed to land to Dakak beach resort only to know that I can only afford to have a photo shoot at the entrance.

So we made a detour for a reason of budget an addition of 3-4 kilometers from it and end up in this paradise beach on a place called Canlucani. Its beach is so natural in semi-white sand beside a rocky mountain. As we go boat-rowing you can see viewing from the surface the sea bottom with plenty of starfishes and sea urchins. Not a typical type to go for a swim huhh!!!. Nevertheless, this beach is rich of species that you can even touch them. A lot of hidden scenic spot which I should had explored if only a got plenty of time. Far from a noise of the city, it is a place of peace to spend a vacation.  Click here to go to Canlucani gallery

Do you consider yourself a computer addict? Well I am since childhood. I was into video computer games as early as my elementary years which nearly ruined the future that I have now. That time I already learned to cut classes. I remember me and my friend left home everyday to school but always making detour to malls. We were most of the time one of the few people standing by the mall entrances waiting for the opening instead of waiting for the teacher to arrive. This extra-curricular activity went on up to High school.  I will not tell anymore how my parents caught me and how I rebelled against them.

When I entered college, I lost my interest in computers maybe because I do not own a personal computer or I just want to make shortcuts and do not care to hear the -  What is a Computer thing. My computer subject is one of the fields of studies that were on my “hate list” along with Solid Mensuration. Then I graduated from college and boarded a vessel on international voyages for my apprenticeship. To lessen the seasickness I got back my enthusiasm on computers especially PCs. I started to explore what’s inside it and had even gone my way to system folders and other unfamiliar files. I do not have a computer degree but my curiosity of it sharpened my computer skills unnoticed and finally I bought and owned a laptop and the exploration continued each day.

Then just recently I started to build my own website under my own domain name www.jojoeland.com although on free web hosting, no rush. This I maintain by myself just like some of my work here. I believed that your interests on things will boost your learning even if there is no one to teach you on how to do that. I do believe as well, although I do not have facts to support this perception that somehow enthusiasm is genetically influenced. When I see my two year old son, I see Me. His cries cannot be silenced by candies or toys but my laptop where he spend time watching and imitating his father do the computer work.
So I will end this one here and explore. More of myself here.
