Collisions can be avoided if every vessel abided by the International Rules for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea 1972, which came into force in 1977. It is therefore not surprising that collision accidents are increasing because these regulations were disregarded in differing areas. The most common contributory factors in all of the collisions were poor use of radar and poor lookout. The highlight of the need for the watch keepers on merchant vessels to keep an especially good lookout for and be knowledgeable of the rules contained in the COLREG. The collision regulations indicate that may is not the same as shall and there is a need to apply the COLREGS on every occasion.
